Professor Chantal Mathieu is a Professor of Medicine at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Chair of Endocrinology at the University Hospital Gasthuisbery Leuven, Belgium, who has contributed to the field of diabetes and endocrinology through basic and clinical research. Her basic research focuses on pathogenesis and the prevention of type 1 diabetes, including the immune effects of vitamin D. 

Professor Mathieu’s clinical work involves studies of new products and treatment paradigms in diabetes, screening for type 1 diabetes, arresting type 1 diabetes, diabetes and pregnancy, new insulins, novel technologies, and adjunct therapies in type 1 diabetes. This work has led to invitations to speak at international forums. Professor Mathieu coordinates the European clinical trial network for interventions in type 1 diabetes ‘INNODIA’ and the European project ‘EDENT1FI’ on screening for type 1 diabetes, and is president of the European Diabetes Forum. She has been the supervisor of 30 PhD theses and author or co-author of more than 500 peer-reviewed publications in international journals.

Dr Athena Philis-Tsimikas is a board-certified endocrinologist, is the Corporate Vice President of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute and Diabetes Service Line at Scripps Health in San Diego, California. With over 25 years of experience, she creates programmes, conducts research, and delivers diabetes services across five Scripps hospitals, thirty outpatient facilities, and the community. Dr Philis-Tsimikas is a leader of the innovative Project Dulce and Dulce Digital programme, which cares for diverse low-resource populations with diabetes. She actively promotes participation of health centres in community-based clinical research with a focus on integrating digital technologies to improve diabetes care in the ambulatory and hospital setting. She serves as the Director of Community Engaged Research for the Scripps Research Translational Institute’s NCATS-funded Clinical Translational Science Award and leads the Diabetes Clinical Research Center for Scripps Health. She has served as PI and MPI on 8 R-level NIH-funded awards.

Dr. Harpreet Singh Bajaj is a clinical endocrinologist and Medical Director of Endocrine and Metabolic research at LMC Healthcare/Centricity in Canada. He is the Principal Investigator of the Canadian Diabetes Prevention Program, a nationwide initiative between LMC and Diabetes Canada, funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada. Following his tenure as Chair of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Steering Committee at Diabetes Canada, Dr. Bajaj now serves as the Past Chair on this committee.

His clinical research focuses on primary prevention, remission, and management of type 2 diabetes, as well as secondary prevention of diabetes complications. Dr. Bajaj has published original research extensively in leading medical journals. His h-index is greater than 40, with over 10,000 citations of his research work. 

Career highlights include a research associate position at Leadership Sinai Centre for Diabetes, Mount Sinai Hospital (University of Toronto), and his Medscape column titled “The Sugar Beat”. Committed to advancing public health, Dr. Bajaj founded the charitable STOP Diabetes Foundation in 2013 and hosts a weekly health talk show on the South-Asian Channel Y.
